On October 13, 2026, an international training workshop under UNESCO’s "Memory of the World" program, themed "Expanding the Potential of Documentary Diversity," opened in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The primary objective of the workshop is to strengthen international cooperation and enhance the human and technical capacity of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, enabling them to effectively preserve and nominate valuable documentary heritage for inclusion in the international UNESCO "Memory of the World" Register.

The event was organized by the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI), in collaboration with the UNESCO National Commissions of South Korea and Indonesia, as well as the Korea Heritage Service.

The opening ceremony was attended by Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Giring Ganesha, and the Chair of the UNESCO "Memory of the World" Committee for the Asia-Pacific region, Kwibae Kim.

This workshop is set to be the largest in the history of the UNESCO "Memory of the World" program, bringing together representatives from across the Asia-Pacific region—including Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Palau, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tuvalu.

Leading international experts in the field of documentary heritage preservation have also arrived in Jakarta to participate.

The workshop agenda covers practical topics such as methods for nominating items, assessing the physical condition of collections, risk management, and preparing materials for long-term digital preservation, among others.

Turkmenistan is represented at the current international workshop of the "Memory of the World" program by Chinar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, and Maksat Meredov, a researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature, and National Manuscripts of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.

The UNESCO "Memory of the World" training workshop will continue until October 18.
